June 12, 2006
Twenty-five prominent business executives and entrepreneurs from the Middle East and North Africa are in San Diego for the Middle East Entrepreneur Training in the U.S. (MEET U.S.) program, an intensive three-week training and networking program which began today. MEET U.S. is funded by the U.S. Department of State Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) and presented by the Beyster Institute at the Rady School of Management, University of California, San Diego.
The participants hail from Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Yemen; and are leaders in the fields of marketing, information technology, communications, banking and more. The program features interactive sessions led by university faculty and business leaders, as well as networking opportunities and site visits to area companies. In the third week of the program, participants are matched up with companies in their respective fields across the U.S. for two-day internships. Hosts include software development companies, advertising firms, telecommunications companies, a venture capitalist, a bank, an exporter and a television station.
MEET U.S. targets entrepreneurs, senior executives and younger managers in growth companies from 15 Middle Eastern and North African countries and territories to participate in advanced business training and networking activities. This is the seventh in an ongoing series of MEET U.S. training programs presented in San Diego by the Beyster Institute. Within the region, the Institute presents additional entrepreneurship training programs, development opportunities for the nearly 200 MEET U.S. alumni, and events especially for the region’s women entrepreneurs. The Beyster Institute also manages the Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence in Bahrain, which offers development and networking programs for entrepreneurs in the region.
The Institute will host its next San Diego-based MEET U.S. program in September for leaders of Middle Eastern and North African non-governmental organizations. A business women’s summit is also planned for October 2006 in Abu Dhabi for female business leaders.
The U.S. Department of State Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) is a presidential initiative created in 2003 to support economic, political and educational reform efforts in the Middle East. More information is available at www.mepi.state.gov.
